Ski Stop #9 of 42 - Troll Ski Resort

The Skädi Tour is headed back north to visit the friendly Troll Ski Resort, 251km away, on Lhtako Dene Territory.

Visiting Troll is the ski area equivalent to a great big hug! Even on your first visit to this ski area, 45 km east of Quesnel on the Barkerville Highway in North Cariboo Region, it feels like coming home. Other than the moose greeting us, the very first person we saw was owner Hildur, in an apron, helping school kids get their gear on.

Troll has 527 metres (1729 ft) of vertical on 4 T-Bars - conveniently called The Yellow, Red, Blue, and Silver. They believe in T-Bars at Troll to keep their lift ticket prices affordable for all the local skiers. There is a lot to ski at this North Cariboo Region ski area - and that is soon going to get even better. GM Scott Zacharius showed us the plans for their new T-Bar - The Black - that will open up a swack of terrain in the Pinegrove area on the adjacent mountain to the west. All the runs are cut and it looks so enticing. The new area will be opening next winter. An additional lodge has just been completed too, with views of both mountain faces. Troll is expanding its hold on new territory.

Troll, along with many other B.C. ski areas, has been dealing with lots of weather challenges this winter. The recent unseasonal warm snap had Scott going in every direction to remain open. Riding the Blue T-Bar, Scott told us a great father & son story about working on the mountain at the end of the day. It was a story about a youth/parent collaboration, right on theme with our Tidbits of Change Foundation efforts. You can see and hear Scott's inspiring tale here:

The main lodge, a cozy log building built by Hildur's father Lars, is the central heartbeat of the resort. Great fireplace, amazing cinnamon buns, and often fantastic events. A long time ago, everyone at Troll adopted Troll Midnight. At 9pm, everyone packs it in at the lodge and starts to get ready for or dream about the next day.

We can't wait to come back to Troll and get a chance to ski the newly cut Lars' Legacy. Our video recap of our day is below, set to the amazing Pharis and Jason Romero's Kind Girl. The Juno Award Winning Romeros' studio and banjo luthiery is near Troll in Horsefly - and they love to ski and visit friends at Troll. You can hear more of their music at www.pharisandjason.com. You can hear the whole Skädi playlist featuring Canadian artists on Spotify.
