Ski Stop #12 of 42 - Bear Mountain Ski Hill

215 km east to Dawson Creek and we found Bear Mountain, a local gem of a ski hill located on Beaver, Cree, Saulteau, Sicannie (Sikanni), and Slavey Territory. They have the T-bar from Marmot Basin in Jasper. That T-bar was the first one Greg fell off of as a youngster and took out 6 people on the T's behind him. That T-bar now at Bear Mountain accesses 10 runs and 150 metres (490 ft) of vertical. Bear Mountain once boasted an Olympic-sized ski jump, but now it is just an awesome spot to get some turns in - day and night.

Paul Gevatkoff and his team at Bear Mountain run a top-notch local ski area. The lodge is beautiful and everything on the mountain is in tip-top shape. So good that they have hosted the alpine events for the BC Winter Games. We skied with long-time super volunteer Bryan Harman, who showed us the best place to stop for a long-reaching view back to Dawson Creek and beyond.

Riding the T-bar with Bryan, he told us how the community rallied to save the ski area in 2009/2010 - you can watch that T-bar talk here:

Bear Mountain had great snow coverage. Their snow making has allowed them to save the ski area this winter, with such little to no snow in northern B.C. We had some great fun ripping off big wide GS turns for the day.

We left Bear Mountain thinking about how fortunate the Dawson Creek community members are to have this winter playground in their backyard. No doubt, a lot of people have learned to ski and snowboard at Bear Mountain.
