Ski Stop #6 of 42 - Tabor Mountain

We backtracked from Purden 43 km to Tabor Mountain - just outside of Prince George - Lheidli T'enneh Territory.

A lot of people have fond memories of skiing Tabor and the high-level events they held there - including the Canada Winter Games in 2015 when Meryeta O'Dine, whose family owned Tabor Mountain, won gold in Snowboard Cross. O'Dine would later find her path to become a double bronze medalist Olympian - but the resort's fortunes followed a different path. Tragedy struck the resort in February of 2018 when their lodge burned down. A sad day. A very bad day. The ski area ended up ceasing operations and still remains closed.

We knew Tabor Mountain was closed, but still kept it on our list to visit in B.C. because the lifts are still all there and Fern Thibault, Meryeta's father, has the dream to reopen it and has been working hard to do just that. Fern allowed us to tour the area and took time to chat with us:

He wanted to make it clear that the area is absolutely not open to the public. They have had to deal with an unfair share of vandalism and theft on the property while they have been closed - all while keeping their dream of reopening alive. Their master plan was completed and they hope to have skiers and boarders back on the mountain as early as next year.

The chairlift and T-bar are in place, chairs are lined up and ready to go back on, groomers are ready - the plan is set - we're keeping our fingers crossed for Fern and all the skiers and riders who look forward to getting back on Tabor Mountain. When we were leaving, Fern said when they do have their grand re-opening that we're invited. Looking forward to that day happening. Our daily recap video from our stop in Tabor is below, featuring Bad Day by B.C.'s Daniel Powter (www.danielpowter.com).
